Does Time Doctor track files and documents opened while tracking time?
Note: Time Doctor’s desktop tracking features are available on paid plans and can be accessed by users with appropriate roles, as configured by Owners/Admins.
TL;DR: Time Doctor does not maintain a dedicated log of files or documents opened. It tracks app and web usage, activity levels, and optionally screenshots, but not file names.
No, Time Doctor does not provide a detailed log of file or document names opened by users during tracked time.
When tracking is active, the app can monitor:
- Time spent in applications and websites
- Keyboard and mouse activity levels (but not specific actions)
- Screenshots or screen video (if enabled by Admins)
If a document is open in an application like Microsoft Word or Excel, Time Doctor will:
- Register the application being used
- Track time spent in it
- Potentially capture a screenshot showing the document
However, it will not:
- Record the document or file name directly
- Log the content or track specific file access events
This means file or document visibility is incidental and depends on how the application displays titles and whether screenshots are enabled. There is no parsing of file metadata or filenames within Time Doctor's current features.
Tracking only occurs while the timer is running and respects user permissions and feature configurations.
