FAQs with Payroll in Time Doctor

TL;DR

Set up Payroll in Time Doctor by enabling Use payroll in Settings > Company Settings, then configure access, payment methods, pay rates, hourly limits, and adjustments from the Payroll page. Payroll is available on Standard and Premium plans, is not available for Automatic companies, and the Owner can enable it and grant access to other users.

Who can access the Payroll feature in Time Doctor?

Only the company Owner can enable Payroll and grant access to other users. Access can be configured under Settings > Company Settings in the "Who can access payroll" section. Payroll is available on Standard and Premium plans only and is not available for Automatic companies.

How do I enable Payroll in Time Doctor?

Go to Settings > Company Settings, scroll to the Configuration section, find "Use payroll," and toggle it ON. Once enabled, a Payroll menu item will appear at the top of your dashboard.

What payment methods are supported for Payroll?

Time Doctor supports the following payment methods: PayPal, Wise, Gusto, Payoneer, ADP, Deel, and Manual (available by default). You can enable additional methods directly from the Payroll page.

How do I set hourly limits for each user?

On the Payroll page, you can add hourly limits per user with the following options:

  • Per Period – Limit for the entire payroll period

  • Per Weekday – Limit based on weekdays only (e.g., 8 hours × number of weekdays)

  • Per Day – Limit per individual day, including weekends

  • Per Workday – Limit per weekday (Mon–Fri) only (Note: Hourly limit and limit range are not supported for the Deel payment method)

What does the "Per Period" hourly limit mean, and how is the period defined?

The "Per Period" limit applies to the entire payroll period you select when generating payroll. There is no separate setting to define the period — instead, the period is determined by the date range filter you apply on the Payroll page. You can filter by Weekly, Monthly, or a custom Date Range. The hourly limit will then apply across the total hours within that selected date range.

How do I export Payroll data?

You can export payroll in the following ways:

  • Single payment method – Export as a CSV file for use with PayPal, Wise, Gusto, Payoneer, or ADP

  • Multiple payment methods – Export as a ZIP file containing separate CSVs per method

  • Export Summary – Generates one CSV for all selected users regardless of payment method

Can I set up payroll via CSV import?

Yes. You can set up payroll by importing a CSV file. Download the CSV template from the Payroll page, fill in the payroll details using Excel, Numbers, Google Sheets, or similar software, and then upload the completed file.

Does Time Doctor remember pay rates and payment methods between payroll cycles?

Yes. Time Doctor automatically saves and recalls currencies, pay rates, and payment methods for the next payroll cycle, so you don't need to re-enter them each time.

Can I add bonuses or deductions to payroll?

Yes. You can optionally add or deduct adjustments (such as bonuses or deductions) for each user directly on the Payroll page.
