How to Choose the Right Time Doctor Installation Path for Each Environment
Note: Time Doctor desktop apps are available in all Time Doctor subscription plans and can be accessed by all user access roles. Automatic App downloads and deployment settings are typically handled by Owners and Admins. If the company is in the European Union, use the Interactive Desktop App because the Automatic App is not available there.
TL;DR:
Choose the installation path based on the work environment before deployment. Use the Interactive Desktop App for remote teams, mixed-use devices, and environments that need user control. Use the Automatic App for work-only devices and centrally managed rollouts. For Ubuntu Wayland, use the Time Doctor Browser App instead of the Interactive desktop app. For VMs and Remote Desktop Server environments, install inside the remote environment and remember that only activity inside that session is tracked.
Use this guide to decide which Time Doctor installation method fits each environment before rollout.
Choose the app type and installation path based on who will install it, how devices are managed, and whether tracking should be user-controlled or silent.
Use the right app type first
Choose the Interactive Desktop App when user control is needed
Use the Interactive Desktop App when team members need to:
- start or pause tracking
- select tasks
- adjust app settings
- work on remote or mixed-use devices
This is usually the best fit for self-installation and general onboarding.
Choose the Automatic App when silent tracking is required
Use the Automatic App when the environment is:
- work-only
- centrally managed
- intended for minimal user interaction
Avoid this option for EU-based teams.
Match the environment to the installation path
Single computer for one user
Use the Interactive Desktop App for the smoothest setup in most self-install scenarios.
Use the Automatic App only if the computer is dedicated to work and the company tracking mode allows it.
Windows managed environment
Use the Automatic App with:
- Group Policy for Active Directory environments
- Microsoft Intune for managed device rollout
- JumpCloud for device management outside traditional AD-only setups
macOS managed environment
Use the Automatic App with:
- Jamf for policy-based deployment and PPPC preparation
- JumpCloud for managed script-based rollout
Grant the required permissions after installation or preconfigure them with device management where supported.
Ubuntu environment
Use the Interactive Desktop App only with Xorg (X11).
If the computer uses Wayland, use the Time Doctor Browser App instead.
For Automatic installs on Ubuntu, use the installer script from the Downloads page.
VM or remote server environment
Install the app inside the VM or remote server if work is performed there.
Remember:
- the app tracks only activity inside that remote environment
- the host computer is not tracked by the app running in the VM
- installing the Automatic App in both the VM and the local machine can create duplicate profiles
Plan user provisioning before installation
Use invites for standard Interactive onboarding
Invite users from Invite so they can install the Interactive app through the normal setup flow.
Use CSV import for bulk Interactive onboarding
Use CSV import when creating many Interactive users without sending emails.
Use SSO provisioning for SSO-based companies
If the company uses SSO, provision users through:
API
allowed domains
organization-managed provisioning options
Avoid common rollout mistakes
- Do not deploy the Automatic App to shared machines with multiple active OS user profiles.
- Do not install the Automatic App across both local and virtual environments for the same person unless the behavior is fully understood.
- Do not use the Interactive Desktop App on Ubuntu Wayland.
- Do not assume installation alone is enough on macOS; confirm required permissions afterward.
Recommended deployment pattern by scenario
| Scenario | Recommended app | Recommended path |
|---|---|---|
| Single-user setup | Interactive | Install from Downloads |
| Work-only managed Windows device | Automatic | Group Policy, Intune, or JumpCloud |
| Work-only managed macOS device | Automatic | Jamf or JumpCloud |
| Ubuntu with Xorg | Interactive | Install desktop app |
| Ubuntu with Wayland | Interactive alternative | Use Time Doctor Browser App |
| VM or Remote Desktop Server | Interactive or Automatic | Install inside remote environment |
| EU-based team | Interactive | Do not use Automatic |
