Track Activity via the Local Machine and Virtual Machine

Note: The Interactive App Tracking feature is available on all Time Doctor subscription plans and can be accessed by all user access roles.

TL;DR:

Install the Time Doctor Interactive app on both the local machine and inside the virtual machine. Start tracking on each instance to record activity from both environments simultaneously. The environment that uploads time first will be prioritized in the reports.

How to Track Activity via the Local Machine and Virtual Machine Using the Time Doctor Interactive App

The Time Doctor Interactive app can capture activity data from both the local machine and a virtual machine simultaneously. This ensures complete visibility into work performed across both environments.

Step 1: Install the Interactive App on the Local Machine

  1. Download the Time Doctor Interactive app from the official Time Doctor downloads page.
  2. Install the application following the on-screen instructions.
  3. Log in with the assigned Time Doctor account credentials.

Step 2: Install the Interactive App on the Virtual Machine

  1. Access the virtual machine environment.
  2. Download and install the Time Doctor Interactive app inside the virtual machine.
  3. Log in with the same Time Doctor account credentials.

Step 3: Start Tracking on Both Environments

  1. On the local machine, select a task and click Start to begin tracking.
  2. On the virtual machine, select the same or a different task and click Start.
  3. Both environments will now record:
    • Screenshots
    • Keyboard and mouse activity
    • Web and app usage data

Important: If both environments are tracking at the same time, whichever environment uploads time to the server first will be prioritized and reflected in the reports. The other environment’s data for the same time range may be overridden.

Step 4: Review Activity Data

  • Activity from the local machine and virtual machine will appear separately in the Time Doctor web app under Reports / Timeline and Reports / Activity Summary.
  • Use these reports to compare or analyze productivity across both environments.
