How to Use Custom NTP Servers

Note: Custom NTP Servers is available in all Time Doctor plans and can be configured by Owners and Admins.

TL;DR:

Set the SF_NTP_SERVERS environment variable to use custom NTP servers in the Time Doctor desktop app. Separate multiple servers with a comma or semicolon. Restart the desktop app after applying changes.

The Time Doctor desktop app relies on NTP (Network Time Protocol) to ensure accurate time synchronization. By default, the app uses well-known and publicly accessible NTP servers. To customize this behavior, configure the SF_NTP_SERVERS environment variable.

Steps to Configure Custom NTP Servers

  1. Open the System Environment Variables editor.
  2. Add a new variable named SF_NTP_SERVERS.
  3. Enter the list of preferred NTP servers. Use commas or semicolons as separators.
    • Example: ntp1.server.com;ntp2.server.com;ntp3.server.com
  4. Save the changes.
  5. Restart the Time Doctor desktop app.

User vs System Variables

  • User variable: Applies only to the currently logged-in user.
  • System variable: Applies to all users on the same computer.

Important Notes
  • If the local time is incorrect or if the custom NTP servers are unreachable, recorded time in Time Doctor may be affected.
  • Incorrectly configured servers can lead to inaccurate tracking.
  • Restarting the desktop app is required for changes to take effect.
