System Error: “api-ms-win-crt-runtime-|1-1-0.dll is missing”

TL;DR:

Resolve the “api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing” error by fully updating Windows and (re)installing the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (install both x64 and x86). Then restart, check for updates again, and reinstall the Time Doctor app.

This Windows error is typically caused by incomplete Windows Updates or a missing/corrupted Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable library. Follow the steps below in order.

Update Windows (critical)

  • Open SettingsWindows UpdateCheck for updates.
  • Install all Important/Cumulative/Servicing Stack updates.
  • Restart the computer.

Why this matters: the Universal CRT is shipped via Windows Update and through the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Missing updates can block the redistributable from installing correctly.

Repair or install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable

Option A — Repair (if already installed):

  • Open Control PanelPrograms and Features.
  • Locate Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable (or 2015 Redistributable on older systems).
  • Right‑click each installed entry (x64 and x86) → ChangeRepair.
  • Restart the computer.

Option A — Fresh install (if repair fails or not installed):

  • Uninstall any damaged entries (Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 / 2015 redistributables) from Programs and Features.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Download the latest supported Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installer from Microsoft.
  • Install both files:
    • vc_redist.x64.exe (64‑bit)
    • vc_redist.x86.exe (32‑bit)
  • Restart again.

Tip: Installing both architectures covers 64‑bit Windows apps and any 32‑bit components used by the Time Doctor desktop app.

Reinstall the Time Doctor Windows desktop app

  • Download the installer from the Time Doctor Downloads page.
  • Run the installer and complete setup.

Step‑by‑step (quick reference)

  1. Update Windows completely → Restart
  2. Repair installed Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entries (x64 and x86) → Restart
  3. If repair fails: Uninstall Redistributables → Restart → Install latest supported vc_redist x64 and x86 → Restart
  4. Install the Time Doctor app again
  5. Recheck Windows Update if needed
