How to Use the Time Doctor Chrome Browser Extension or Firefox Browser AddOn
Note: Time Doctor Chrome Browser Extension or Firefox Browser AddOn are both available with Standard & Premium Time Doctor Subscription Plans. This can be accessed by configured by Owners & Admins and can be used by all user access levels depending on company permission settings.
TL;DR:
- Install the Chrome Extension or Firefox Add-On to track time directly in supported apps.
- Enable Projects & Tasks and activate the extension company-wide in Settings / Integrations.
- For Jira, tracked time syncs back to worklogs (minimum session length: 60 seconds).
- Some integrations need extra setup (HubSpot, Taiga, ClickUp).
The Chrome Extension and Firefox Add-On make it possible to track time directly on tasks from integrated third-party apps.
How It Works
- Install the Extension/Add-On
- Track Time Inside Third-Party Apps
The extension inserts a start/stop button into Jira, Trello, Teamwork Projects, Asana, and other supported apps.- Select Start to begin tracking time in Time Doctor without leaving the app.
- Select Stop Timer to end tracking.
- Sync with Desktop App
All tracked tasks and time sync automatically with the desktop app and appear in Time Doctor reports.
How to Activate the Chrome Extension or Firefox Add-On Company-Wide
- Use the Interactive Desktop App Version
Confirm the company uses the interactive desktop app version (not the automatic version). - Enable the Projects & Tasks Feature
Go to Settings / Company Settings page and enable Projects & Tasks. - Activate the Extension/Add-On
If not already active, go to Settings / Integrations page and activate the extension/add-on. - Enable for Specific Users (Optional)
Toggle ON for selected users in Settings / Users page under the Integration tasks column. - Prompt Users to Install
- Existing employees receive a prompt from the desktop app to install the Chrome extension or Firefox add-on, depending on their browser.
- New employees receive the same prompt as part of their onboarding.
How Tracked Time Is Sent Back to Jira
- For Jira only, tracked time uploads automatically to Jira worklogs, ensuring they match Time Doctor worklogs.
- The extension sends time to Jira every five minutes via the user’s browser session.
- If Jira is closed, tracked time is stored and uploaded when Jira is reopened.
- Any page within the Jira domain can upload time.
Limitation: Jira discards worklogs shorter than 60 seconds, which can cause minor differences between Jira and Time Doctor worklogs.
